How to redact a product roadmap PDF
Product roadmaps are often shared with customers, investors, and partners, but a full internal roadmap can reveal strategy, owners, dependencies, and unreleased features.
Create an audience-specific copy
Decide whether the audience needs themes, target dates, customer commitments, or only a high-level direction. Remove internal codenames, employee contacts, ticket numbers, and features outside the conversation. Preserve caveats so a date is not mistaken for a guarantee.
Inspect more than the visible cards
Search notes, speaker comments, hidden layers, links, attachments, and metadata. Review screenshots of dashboards and tables for customer names or internal URLs. A roadmap exported from a presentation may contain hidden slides or speaker notes.
Verify the shared version
Export a new PDF, reopen it, search for project codenames, inspect attachments and links, and compare the visible plan with the approved scope. Keep the internal roadmap unchanged.
Frequently asked questions
Should dates be redacted?
Remove dates that are not approved for the audience; keep the timing context needed to answer the request.
Can hidden presentation notes enter a PDF?
Yes, depending on the export. Inspect comments, attachments, and document properties.
Is a watermark enough?
No. A watermark labels a document but does not remove confidential roadmap content.
