How to redact a PDF while preserving its layout
Redacting a PDF should remove sensitive content without making the remaining record impossible to read. This matters for tables, forms, court filings, and documents where page geometry carries meaning.
Mark tightly and review nearby content
Use the smallest region that fully covers the sensitive value. Avoid covering labels, units, dates, or neighboring rows that the reader needs for context. For scanned pages, inspect the mark at high zoom and check that it follows the underlying pixels rather than an approximate text selection.
Preserve geometry during export
Keep page size, orientation, bookmarks, and required headers. Avoid reflowing the document into a word processor when the original layout is part of the record. Review fonts and line wrapping after export, especially around forms and narrow tables.
Verify the visible and hidden result
Search the output for removed values, inspect thumbnails, and compare page count and dimensions. Remove comments, attachments, and hidden fields that could disclose the original. Keep the unredacted source under controlled access.
Frequently asked questions
Why do redactions sometimes shift a page?
Reflow-based editors can change line wrapping and table geometry. A content-level workflow preserves the page canvas.
Should I redact whole rows in a table?
Only when the row is entirely sensitive. Otherwise mark the smallest complete cells that protect the data.
Does preserving layout preserve hidden data?
Not by itself. Verify text, pixels, OCR, forms, metadata, and attachments separately.

Redaction that proves itself
Basalt destroys the content you mark, then re-opens the file it wrote and proves the content is gone before it saves anything. Your documents never leave your Mac.
